A comic exploring my complicated feelings about body image, comparison and beauty through the lens of live portraiture
I work as a live portraiture artist. In this line of work I meet all kinds of people, with all kinds of faces and all kinds of feelings about them. By drawing their portrait I am claiming to draw their face, as it is, but in reality this is of course not possible. Representing a face (a 3d object) on paper (a 2d space) is always a process of interpretation. I have to leave out a lot of stuff, sometimes they also ask me explicitly to change something about their appearance. This creates an interesting space between realism and interpretation, and possibly a responsibility for me. Do I want to contribute to our culture of beautify filters and comparison? I originally went in to this because i wanted to have fun...
