Is it possible to truthfully "capture" the complex and layered meaning of home in a singular product?
My fascination with this project lies with the "truthfulness" of it all: is it possible to truthfully summarise a complex concept, in my case home, without losing its essence?
One of the outcomes of this semester was my comic, Thresholds, about capturing the meaning of home. The other outcome was this process book, in which I explain the path my research took.
A process book is a linear document detailing the process from research question, to conclusion and product. When working on the project I didn't feel this organised. I felt like I was walking in circles and working on all steps at the same time.
I know this experience is quite common in artistic projects: it's difficult to structure when there is no predetermined methodology. However, after completion of the project I felt like I was now expected to take this artistic everything-happens-at-the-same-time process, and translate it to a story that was more structured, easier to explain but not at all a representation of my process.
The research didn't take a linear path from A to Z, to present it this way wouldn't make sense. At the same time, I want to communicate as clearly as possible in order to explain what I did.
In this version of my process book I combine four different "layers" of my research, representing four main lines of research happening at the same time. Because the booklets are all different sizes, there is no one true "first page" and you are invited to start wherever you want, and move back and forth throughout the book.
As an added bonus, the research booklet now visually resembles the colours of my comic :)
